Vocal polyp/nodule excision for treatment of hoarse voice

Vocal polyps and nodules are benign growths on the vocal cords that can cause a persistent hoarse voice, vocal fatigue, and difficulty speaking or singing. These lesions often result from prolonged vocal strain, misuse, or chronic irritation of the vocal cords. Vocal polyp/nodule excision is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring normal voice function and relieving discomfort.

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness or roughness in the voice
  • Voice fatigue, especially after prolonged talking or singing
  • Difficulty reaching high notes in singers
  • Breathiness or intermittent voice breaks
  • Throat discomfort or mild pain while speaking

Causes

  • Excessive vocal strain from yelling, singing, or public speaking
  • Chronic irritation from smoking, acid reflux, or allergies
  • Repeated misuse of the voice or poor vocal technique
  • Trauma to the vocal cords or repeated inflammation

Treatment

Vocal polyp/nodule excision is performed under general anesthesia using microsurgical techniques to carefully remove the lesions while preserving normal vocal cord tissue. Post-surgery, patients often undergo voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist to strengthen the vocal cords, improve vocal technique, and prevent recurrence. Medications may be prescribed to control inflammation, reflux, or infection if present.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid excessive shouting, yelling, or prolonged talking
  • Practice proper vocal techniques and warm-ups for singers
  • Stay hydrated and maintain good vocal hygiene
  • Avoid smoking and exposure to irritants
  • Manage acid reflux, allergies, or sinus issues promptly

Early diagnosis and timely intervention for vocal polyps and nodules are essential to restore voice quality and prevent long-term vocal damage. Regular check-ups and adherence to voice care routines can help maintain healthy vocal cords.
