Symptoms of Vertigo

  • A spinning or whirling sensation
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache or migraine-associated dizziness
  • Sweating or abnormal eye movements (nystagmus)

Causes of Vertigo

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – small crystals in the inner ear dislodged
  • Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis – inflammation of the inner ear
  • Meniere’s disease – excessive fluid buildup in the inner ear
  • Migraines affecting balance centers
  • Head injury, stroke, or neurological disorders

Treatment of Vertigo

  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy – exercises to improve balance and coordination
  • Medications – antihistamines, anti-nausea drugs, or vestibular suppressants
  • Canalith repositioning maneuvers (e.g., Epley maneuver) for BPPV
  • Treatment of underlying conditions like infections or migraines
  • Lifestyle adjustments – avoiding sudden head movements, hydration, and adequate sleep

Prevention Tips

  • Maintain good hydration and balanced diet
  • Avoid sudden head movements or bending quickly
  • Manage stress and get sufficient sleep
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Regular vestibular exercises if prone to dizziness
