Stapedotomy

Stapedotomy is a delicate surgical procedure performed to treat hearing loss caused by problems in the middle ear, particularly due to stapes bone fixation, a condition known as otosclerosis. This surgery helps restore the movement of sound-conducting bones and significantly improves hearing.

Symptoms

  • Gradual hearing loss, often affecting both ears
  • Difficulty hearing low-pitched sounds or understanding speech in noisy environments
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Occasional dizziness or balance problems

Causes

  • Otosclerosis – abnormal bone growth around the stapes bone, preventing its proper movement
  • Genetic predisposition – family history of hearing loss due to otosclerosis
  • Age-related changes in middle ear bones
  • Ear infections or trauma leading to stapes fixation (less common)

Treatment

Stapedotomy involves creating a tiny opening in the fixed stapes bone and inserting a prosthetic device to restore the transmission of sound vibrations to the inner ear. The procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. Post-surgery care includes:

  • Short-term pain management and antibiotics to prevent infection
  • Avoiding pressure changes, heavy lifting, and sneezing with closed mouth for a few weeks
  • Regular follow-up audiometry to monitor hearing improvement

Prevention Tips

  • Regular hearing check-ups, especially if there is a family history of otosclerosis
  • Protect ears from trauma and prolonged exposure to loud noises
  • Promptly treat ear infections to prevent complications
  • Maintain overall ear health through good hygiene and avoiding insertion of foreign objects

Stapedotomy is a highly effective surgical solution for conductive hearing loss caused by stapes fixation, offering significant improvement in hearing and quality of life when performed by experienced ENT surgeons.
