Tympanomastoidectomy

Tympanomastoidectomy is a specialized surgical procedure performed to treat chronic ear infections and diseases affecting the middle ear and mastoid bone. It is often indicated when conservative treatments, such as antibiotics or ear drops, fail to resolve persistent infections or prevent hearing loss. This surgery helps restore ear function, eradicate infection, and prevent complications like hearing impairment or spread of infection to adjacent structures.

Symptoms Indicating Tympanomastoidectomy

  • Persistent ear discharge (otorrhea) that does not respond to medication
  • Chronic ear pain or discomfort
  • Hearing loss in the affected ear
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
  • Recurrent ear infections

Causes

  • Chronic otitis media (persistent middle ear infection)
  • Cholesteatoma (abnormal skin growth in the middle ear)
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction leading to fluid accumulation
  • Untreated or recurrent infections damaging the ear structures

Treatment

Tympanomastoidectomy involves removing infected tissue from the middle ear and mastoid bone while preserving as much of the healthy structure as possible. The surgery may include repairing the eardrum (tympanoplasty) to improve hearing. Postoperative care includes:

  • Antibiotics to prevent or treat residual infection
  • Pain management with prescribed medications
  • Ear care instructions to avoid water entry and trauma
  • Follow-up visits to monitor healing and hearing improvement

Prevention Tips

  • Maintain good ear hygiene and avoid inserting objects into the ear canal
  • Treat acute ear infections promptly under medical guidance
  • Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke and allergens that trigger infections
  • Keep ears dry during swimming or bathing, using protective earplugs if necessary
  • Regular check-ups for individuals with recurrent ear problems
