Septoplasty Nose Surgeries

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated or damaged nasal septum — the cartilage and bone that divide the two nostrils — to improve airflow, relieve obstruction and reduce related problems such as recurrent sinusitis or nosebleeds. It can be performed alone or together with other nasal procedures (for example, functional rhinoplasty) when structural or cosmetic issues coexist.

Symptoms Indicating Septal Problem

  • Persistent nasal congestion or one-sided nasal blockage
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose, worse on one side
  • Recurrent sinus infections or postnasal drip
  • Frequent nosebleeds and crusting inside the nose
  • Noisy breathing during sleep or disturbed sleep due to obstruction

Causes

A deviated septum and related nasal problems may be congenital (present from birth) or acquired. Common causes include trauma to the nose (sports injuries, falls, accidents), developmental asymmetry during growth, previous nasal surgeries, and long-term inflammation from allergies or chronic sinus disease. Age-related changes and fibrosis can also contribute to worsening symptoms over time.

Treatment

Initial management often begins with medical therapy: nasal saline irrigation, topical nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines for allergic contributors, and treatment of sinus infections. When conservative measures fail and quality of life is affected, septoplasty is recommended.

  • Preoperative evaluation: ENT assessment, nasal endoscopy, and sometimes CT scan to map anatomy.
  • Procedure: Incisions inside the nostrils to access and reposition or remove deviated cartilage and bone; external appearance is usually unchanged.
  • Recovery: Most patients go home the same day; swelling and congestion improve over days to weeks. Avoid heavy lifting and nose blowing for 1–2 weeks.
  • Possible adjuncts: Turbinate reduction, functional rhinoplasty, or sinus surgery if indicated.

Prevention Tips & Long-Term Care

  • Protect the nose from trauma: wear helmets and protective gear during sports and activities.
  • Control allergic rhinitis with avoidance measures and prescribed medications to reduce chronic inflammation.
  • Practice nasal hygiene: regular saline irrigations to keep mucosa moist and reduce crusting and infections.
  • Attend follow-up visits after surgery to monitor healing and address any complications early.

Septoplasty is an effective, commonly performed operation that can significantly improve nasal breathing and quality of life when performed for appropriate indications. Discuss risks, expected benefits, and recovery expectations with your ENT specialist before deciding on surgery.
